Frank Bridge (1879-1941) has been described as "the 20th century's most under-rated composer". Well-known as the teacher of Benjamin Britten, he was also a distinguished conductor and viola player who played in the Joachim String Quartet. Besides large-scale works such as "The Sea" and the sonata in this programme, Bridge wrote a wealth of smaller pieces for keen publishers and players of the time. These include some very charming miniatures, counter-balanced by more personal statements such as his Elégie for cello and piano.
